When interviewed by the press FH was wont to say: 'Dan was the man I always wanted to be. Digby, his batman, was the man I saw myself as.' Here is FH as the man he wanted to be.

SIR HUBERT GUEST

Sir Hubert was modelled on FH's father Robert (aka 'Pop') who was often in the studio making tea, lending wit and good humour to help everyone keep going. This photo of him in full space fleet uniform comes from Eagle volume one, number 25.

HOW PRESIDENT KALON GOT THAT TWINKLE IN HIS EYE

It’s not hard to find photographs of Robert Hampson as Sir Hubert Guest. But FH also used his dad to capture specific expressions for President Kalon. In this frame, from Eagle volume one, issue 48, the wily Theron President tells Hank and Pierre he has ‘a few surprises’ in store for the Treens.

PROFESSOR PEABODY

Artist Greta Tomlinson (as she was then) was model for Professor Jocelyn Peabody, the woman Hampson included in the strip 'to be rescued'. Greta helped to draw Dan Dare for about three years, and put in many hours on Marooned on Mercury with fellow artist Harold Johns.

Hampson's art always tried to pinpoint the source of the light. Here FH himself, Joan Porter (partly obscured), Greta Tomlinson, Robert Hampson, Harold Johns and Eric Eden set the scene for the frame below.
